Chemistry
Chemistry is using the knowledge of matter, and how it interacts with other matter, to solve problems that arise in our everyday lives. Students in the La Sierra Chemistry and Biochemistry programs are encouraged to develop a sense of intellectual curiosity about chemical theory and to learn its practical applications. The program also provides excellent preparation to enter medical or dental school or prepare for a graduate program in the health sciences, as well as other careers in the chemical industry.

Description:
A Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry provides a strong foundation for students to understand matter and its interactions at a molecular level. Students will gain a broad level of understanding of chemistry, its applications, and practical laboratory skills while allowing them the flexibility to take additional classes in other areas. This degree is appropriate for students interested in secondary education, entry-level jobs in the chemical industry, and other fields that require basic chemical knowledge and skills.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Predict the outcomes of and solve complex problems in unit conversion, equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamics.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the structure of atoms and molecules as pure substances, including the quantum mechanical nature of matter, polarity, stereochemistry, and the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the energetic requirements and driving forces of reactions, spontaneity, mechanisms, electron flow, and reaction dynamics.
- Evaluate the polarity, solubility, reactivity, stereochemistry, and intermolecular forces of molecules based on chemical structure in mixtures and reactions.
- Explain and apply the process of science, including formulation of questions, experimental design, quantitative measurement & analysis, and data interpretation. Effectively communicate the results consistent with accepted scientific standards.

Description:
A minor in Chemistry consists of taking a portion of the classes required for either the BS or BA degree, and provides students with a strong background in both general and organic Chemistry. A minor in this discipline can be useful for students who are earning degrees in areas that require a basic understanding of molecular sciences—for example, a minor in Chemistry pairs well with Biology, Business, or Liberal Studies.
Career Outlook
Overall employment of chemists and materials scientists is projected to grow 6 percent from 2022 to 2032, faster than the average for all occupations.
The median annual wage for chemists was $80,670 in May 2022. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $49,050, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $139,200.
The median annual wage for materials scientists was $104,380 in May 2022. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $61,730, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $165,840.
