Biochemistry

Biochemists and biophysicists use advanced technologies, such as lasers and fluorescent microscopes, to conduct science experiments and analysis. They also use x-rays and computer modeling software to determine the three-dimensional structures of proteins and other molecules. Biochemists and biophysicists involved in biotechnology research use chemical enzymes to synthesize recombinant DNA.

Programs Offered

Biochemistry
Bachelor of Science

Description:

A Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry provides an in-depth study of matter relating to living systems at a molecular level. Students will gain knowledge about chemical systems, biochemical systems, and metabolism. They will also participate in advanced laboratories and research.

This degree is appropriate for students interested in pursuing advanced degrees in biochemical sciences, working in research and government laboratories, working in the biotechnology industry, or interested in pursuing professional degrees in health sciences such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and other similar fields.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Predict the outcomes of and solve complex problems in unit conversion, equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamics.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the structure of atoms and molecules, including the quantum mechanical nature of matter, polarity, stereochemistry, and the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the energetic requirements and driving forces of reactions, spontaneity, mechanisms, electron flow, reaction dynamics, catalysis, and the nature of biological energy.
  4. Evaluate the polarity, solubility, reactivity, stereochemistry, and intermolecular forces of molecules and macromolecules based on chemical structure.
  5. Explain and apply the process of science, including formulation of questions, experimental design, quantitative measurement & analysis, and data interpretation. Effectively communicate the results consistent with accepted scientific standards.
  6. Explain and apply core concepts of biological information and regulation, including the genome, the manner in which the information it contains is encoded and translated, and the mechanisms by which it is transmitted and maintained across generations.

Description:

A Biochemistry minor consists of taking a portion of the classes required for a major in either the Biochemical Science BS or the Health Professions BS. Students who are interested in careers such as veterinary medicine, toxicology, nutrition, or environmental science should consider the value of a minor in Biochemistry. This minor pairs well with majors such as Biology, Neuroscience, Liberal Studies, and more.

Biochemistry B.S. & PharmD Pathway

Biochemistry BS Pathway 3 years at La Sierra University, assuming transfer to Loma Linda University in year 4 to complete a 4 year Pharm. D. in Pharmacy Program.

Students desiring to take a reduced load during the school year can complete some courses during the summer. Once students complete the program sequencing, students then transfer to Loma Linda School of Pharmacy to earn a Doctorate of Pharmacy. After successful completion of year 1 at Loma Linda, students will be awarded a B.S. in Biochemistry and can participate in the spring graduation ceremonies at La Sierra University.

Career Outlook

6% Job Market Growth

$81,810 Average Median Salary

Many Research Opportunities

Employment of chemists is projected to grow 6 percent as they continue to be needed in scientific research and development (R&D) and to monitor the quality of products and processes. In pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing, chemists will be increasingly needed to develop nanotechnology for medicinal uses. And in basic chemical manufacturing, employers will call upon chemists to use knowledge of green chemistry to improve environmental safety in the workplace and community.

Overall employment of chemists and materials scientists is projected to grow 6 percent from 2022 to 2032, faster than the average for all occupations.

The median annual wage for chemists was $80,670 in May 2022. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $49,050, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $139,200.

The median annual wage for materials scientists was $104,380 in May 2022. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $61,730, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $165,840.
