ESL English as a Second Language
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program assists non- native English-speaking students to acquire, understand, and successfully use academic English at an American university and attain sufficient language proficiency and independent learning strategies to become successful participants in American colleges and universities.
The ESL program may also assist non-native English-speaking students to acquire, understand, and successfully use Standard English for non-academic purposes.

Description:
Eight (8.0) ESL units per quarter for undergraduate students and four (4.0) units for graduate students chosen (as recommended by ESL advisor) from the following courses: ESLC 102 Expanded Composition or ESLC 103 Expanded Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary.

A maximum of eight (8) undergraduate units from University Foundational Studies (per Math ACCUPLACER) as advised by the Office of Advising & Career Success, or four (4) graduate units as advised by a University academic advisor. The number of University units may not exceed the number of ESL units. Graduate students must meet with the ESL Associate Director for further details.
Upon successful completion of the first quarter in the Pathway Program, undergraduate students may register for a total of 12 units the following quarter, four (4) of which must be ESLC 104 Expanded Listening, Pronunciation & Conversation, which focuses on American culture and critical thinking.
Qualification for ESL Pathway Program
In order for students to be eligible for the Pathway program, they must take one of the exit exams and receive one of the following scores: TOEFL paper-based score between 500-549, computer-based score of 70-78; Michigan Language Test score of 51-61; iTEP of 3.5; or IELTS score of 5.5-6.0.
Successful completion of the Expanded Level ESL or Pathway Program requires the completion of ENGL 111B with a minimum grade of C. Upon completion, a student is guaranteed admission to a university-level program.

Description:
All international ESL students must register for a minimum of 12 units in order for their I-20 to remain in status. It is highly recommended that ESL students register for 16 units plus the language lab with one (1) unit. Core Courses: Grammar and Syntax (4); Composition (4); Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary (4); Listening, Pronunciation, & Conversation (4); Language (or TOEFL) Lab (1). All courses are offered at Basic, Beginning, Intermediate, High Intermediate, Advanced, and Expanded levels each quarter. Courses carry an ESLC prefix and are non-degree applicable. Final letter grades do not affect university GPA. Courses do not apply toward graduation in any academic major or pre-professional program, nor do they meet University Studies or general education requirements.

Description:
The purpose of the ESL Intensive Program is to provide visiting attendees with increased exposure to the English language and with experiential insights of American culture in a safe and fun environment. The Program focuses on increasing English language proficiency through activities, conversation, vocabulary, pronunciation, and listening. Learning takes place in the classroom and through exposure to American culture experiences during a number of learning activities.
Classes are taught by experienced English language instructors. These teaching professionals are critical in helping students achieve a greater depth of understanding of the English language and American culture.
Customized programs are available throughout the year to groups of working professionals, college students, and high school students (summer sessions only). One-on-one tutorial sessions are available to working professionals.
ESL Levels
At this level, students learn the fundamental principles that govern the English language by being introduced to the basics of grammar, reading comprehension, conversation, writing, and essential vocabulary for everyday functioning. Successful completion of this level will result in Basic Level competency and transition into the Beginning Level. Courses at this level do not apply toward graduation in any major or pre-professional program, nor do they meet any university studies or general education requirements.

At the completion of this level, students possess enough English language skills to comprehend basic reading material, write their thoughts in simple grammatically-correct sentences and short paragraphs, and have a vocabulary base that allows them to function in everyday situations. Successful completion of this level will result in Beginning Level competency and transition into the Intermediate Level. Courses at this level do not apply toward graduation in any major or pre-professional program, nor do they meet any university studies or general education requirements.

In this level, students develop skills in writing paragraphs and short essays that are clear, cohesive, and well-organized, using a wider range of academic vocabulary. In addition, students are exposed to college-level material. Successful completion of this level will result in Intermediate Level competency and transition into the Advanced Level. Courses at this level do not apply toward graduation in any major or pre-professional program, nor do they meet any university studies or general education requirements.

At the completion of this level, students will have obtained some tools necessary for college success, including elements of critical thinking, planning, and cultural awareness. Part time ESL students in the Expanded level are expected to successfully complete two ESL courses identified below and 1-2 university-level courses, as advised. Students at this level participate in the University's Pathway Program, which ensures the opportunity for successful transition into full-time university study. Courses at this level do not apply toward graduation in any major or pre-professinal program, nor do they meet any university studies or general education requirements.

ISDA courses are designed to accommodate International students who arrive at La Sierra University 2 weeks or more after the start date of an academic term. Courses are 4 units each. These courses carry no academic credit and cannot be used to fulfill any degree, certificate, or pre-professional requirements. ISDA courses are non-transferable to other institutions.
