Description:

The Criminal Justice Program provides students with an understanding of the criminal justice system through scientific theories, field studies, research methods, and the sociological study of crime, criminal behavior, and the policies and systems designed to control criminality. It offers students from various social, racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds a strong base for academic excellence, spiritual growth, and successful career development.

The field of Criminal Justice provides myriad career opportunities, particularly in the areas of Law Enforcement, Forensic Science, Law, Corrections, Counseling, and Probation. The employment of police and detectives is projected to grow approximately 7 percent from 2016 to 2026. Though demand varies by location, the continued need for public safety will continue to lead to new openings for officers. In Feb 2024, in Southern California, the median annual wage for Law Enforcement was $81,591, with salaries in Northern California as high as $134,715. Nationwide the median salary was $88,815.

Other areas include, Corrections, and Probation. Those in Probation can expect a salary on average of $76,547, with the high end being $96,231. The Department of Corrections offers starting salaries up to $111,000.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify and understand the basic foundation of the major components of the criminal justice system (i.e., law enforcement, courts, prosecution, and corrections).
  2. Identify issues and apply theories and principles of substantive and procedural criminal law that regulate the criminal justice system.

  4. Identify the major historical and contemporary issues, policies, programs, and events using the lenses of race, ethnicity, culture, gender, and religion.
